Web Browsers

A browser is software that allows you to surf the World Wide Web. An example would be Netscape or Internet Explorer. There are many web browsers available. You can retrieve them over the Internet or purchase them in stores. Some browsers feature integrated support for sending email and reading newsgroups, chat programs as well as RSA encryption to allow secure communications for commercial applications such as exchanging credit card numbers over the Internet. Browsers can display text and image loading like JPG or GIF files, and display and interact with documents as they load.  Multiple independent windows can also be loaded and interrupted simultaneous.

 

Basic Operations

The Back Button takes you to the last page you were viewing. You can back trace your steps.

The Forward Button takes you forward. This works only after you used the Back Button.

The Stop Button interrupts the browser. This is handy when a page takes to long to load and you want to interrupts the loading and continue surfing.

The Home returns to the home page, which can be set to a particular web site as explained later.

The Reload (Refresh for Internet Explorer) button reloads the page from the server. This is handy when you are working to put up your web page.

The Search connects to a page on Netscape or Microsoft website that lists search tools.

The Print button prints the current document you are viewing.

 

Location field: displays the URL address of the site you are viewing. Also allows you to go directly to a site on the Internet.

Your homepage

By default, when you install your Browser, home pages are predefined and will probably take you to the browser’s home page. You can change the home page that loads when you first launch your browser. With Navigator 4.0, go to the Edit menu, select Preferences. In the Home page section, type in the new web address in the box. If you want Bardstowncable.net to be your home page, enter:

http://www.bardstowncable.net

You can click on the Home button at any time if you want to return to your home page.

If you are using Internet Explorer click the Tools menu, then select Internet options. Type in the URL you want as a home page.

 

Using Bookmarks or Favorites in your Browser.

Your Browser allows you to store addresses of your favorite sites so you can revisit them with out much hassle.

Once you find a site you want to save, go to the Bookmarks or Favorites menu or icon and select Add. When you click on the icon again, the title of the web page you recorded will be at the bottom of the list. To visit a book marked website, just click on it. Your Bookmarks or favorites can also be organized in folder of similar topics.
