Domain Name FAQ Can I get a domain name associated with my Web site? Yes, we do support custom domain names. If you didn't sign up for a custom domain name when you registered you can still sign up now at City Hall. (For example, http://Bardstowncable.net/~username becomes http://www.yourdomain.com/). There is a separate charge for domain names from an outside organization, the InterNIC. This organization controls and registers domain names for the Internet. When you sign up for a domain name with us, we will automatically submit the necessary information to the InterNIC for registration of your domain. We do require that you pay the setup fee $30 and the additional external charge for registering your domain name. This varies based on the number of years you want to own the domain name. Currently, it's $70 for two year and $30 for one years. How do I check if the domain name I want is available? We can easily check it for you, but you can also just as well check it at http://www.internic.net/whois.html. Simply enter the domain name you like in the search box and click submit. Thousands of domain names are registered every week on the Internet. Once a domain name is registered by a person or company, it cannot be used again by anyone else, since every domain name must be unique. Now is the best time to reserve your domain name, before it's taken by someone else. When I sign up for a domain, what do I get? The domain www.yourdomain.com will point to your Web site. If you sign up for additional domains they will also point to the same Web site. We also create email aliases for corporation email addresses. For example john@yourdomain.com How long does it take before my domain name is active? Once the InterNIC announces that your domain name has been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it usually takes about 72 hours before it is active. All Internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect new site locations, through a process called propagation. Can I move my existing domain name to BCI? Yes. Simply enter your existing domain name on the InterNIC Web site or the accredited registrar sites and confirm that you want to move it by clicking the appropriate button. When you move an existing domain name, you will receive a confirmation Email from the InterNIC or the accredited registrar site, sent to the Email address listed as the administrative contact for the domain. You must respond affirmatively to the InterNIC or the accredited registrar to approve your hosting change. Can I access my Web site before my domain name registration becomes active? Yes, your Web site is always accessible via this URL: http://www.bardstowncable.net/~username How can I check to see if my domain is working?? If you are concerned that your domain name is not pointing to the correct address or that it is not resolving to any address, you can check the status by following the steps below. These instructions are assuming that you have already confirmed that the site is reachable by the correct IP address and that your machine can resolve other domain names. The domain "bardstowncable.net" will be used as the sample domain. 1. Confirm that the domain is registered correctly. You can do this by running the command 'whois bardstowncable.net' on a UNIX machine. If you do not have access to this utility, InterNIC (or any accredited register sites) offers an HTML whois directory. http://www.internic.net You can also confirm that the nameservers are set to be: NS1.BARDSTOWNCABLE.NET 208.45.201.10 NS2.BARDSTOWNCABLE.NET 208.45.201.13 2. Confirm that the DNS for the domain is configured correctly. You can do this by using the 'nslookup' utility. The utility 'nslookup' is available on a machine using the UNIX operating system. If you are on Windows95 or Windows98, you may not have an nslookup utility. There is a shareware utility that offers an effective nslookup utility available through IpSwitch. What should I do if I am denied access to my Web site while using a browser? If you receive the message "There is no DNS entry for http://www.yourdomain.com", try the following solutions: 1. Try to reach the site using the URL http://www.bardstowncable.net/username (where username is your BCI User Name). If you are successful, the domain name is either not active or not yet propagated to all Internet providers. If you just signed up for a new domain, it may take up to a week for the name to be processed by the InterNIC or the accredited registrar sites and propagated to domain name servers throughout the Internet. If it is an older domain that was previously reachable, the name may be on hold with the InterNIC or the accredited registrar. Contact the InterNIC or the credited directly to determine the reason. You can check the status of your domain name by using the "whois" page at: http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois. 2. If you can reach the site with the address http://bardstowncable.net/username, and you know it has been more than 72 hours since the name was released by the InterNIC or the accredited registrar, try these solutions: * Clear your browser cache and try again. On Windows: If you are using Netscape Navigator, first select Options, then Network Preferences, and then choose the Cache tab. Click the buttons "Clear Memory Cache Now" and "Clear Disk Cache Now" and OK, then click Reload. For Internet Explorer, select View, then Options, then the Navigation tab, and then click "Clear History" and OK. Click Refresh. Note: Netscape may require manually clearing the cache. For Windows Explorer, find the Netscape folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator\Cache), then highlight and delete the files in the cache folder. Then click the Reload button in Netscape. On the Mac OS: If you are using Netscape Navigator, first select Edit, then Preferences, and then expand the Advanced section. Click on the Cache category, then click the button "Clear Disk Cache Now" and OK, then OK again, then click Reload. For Internet Explorer, select Edit, then Preferences, and then the Advanced category under the Web Browser section. Click the "Empty Now" button and OK, then click Refresh. * If you know that others are able to reach the site with the domain name, but you can't reach it(even after clearing the cache), contact your local ISP. They may not have updated their DNS records yet. * If you are still unable to reach your site after all of these steps, you will need to contact a BCI personal. Do you support multiple domains? Yes, BCI web hosting supports multiple domain names. This means that you can have multiple domain names point to the same server. Support for one domain name is included with every web hosting plan. Each additional domain name costs extra and is to be determined by BCI. Can multiple domain names point to different servers? No, domains can only point to one server / virtual server. If you would like another server / virtual server you will have to open another web hosting account. Can multiple domain names point to specific directories? No, domains can only point to one server / virtual server. You can not have multiple domains point to different directories in your web hosting directory. If you have multiple domains they will all point to the same place. If you are hosting my domain for me, can I still have my Email hosted somewhere else? Yes, we can point your domain name to wherever your Email is currently being hosted. But our email service is included in the domain name hosting. See the service page for more details. How do I verify My account Status? To verify your account status, send an Email to your accredited register site. If you are experiencing problems with you domain name this could be as a result of your account being on hold. Reasons your domain name could be on-hold include an outstanding balance or an abuse of their Domain Name Registration Agreement. If you find your domain is NOT on-hold and you are still having problems, please contact Bardstowncable.net Technical Support. I am registering a new domain and I need to get the names and IP addresses for your nameservers. Is there any other information I need? When processing new requests with the InterNIC, you'll need to use the following names and IP addresses for our primary and secondary servers: NS1.BARDSTOWNCABLE.NET 208.45.201.10 NS2.BARDSTOWNCABLE.NET 208.45.201.13 Also, you'll want to type the BCI as a Technical Contact. This will assist us in making the changes to the domain in the event you are unable or unavailable to make them yourself. |
