Overview of Internet and its Services Simply, the Internet is a global computer network. Using certain software you can do a variety of things. You can send electronic mail, which is a text message, and can include images and videos as attachments. You can use the Internet to search for people, get information on varies topics, get driving directions, play games download free software and various more. The World Wide Web (WWW) is a large computer network where by using a browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer you can surf and get information. The documents on the www are called web pages and there are millions of them. Electronic Mail (email) is another Internet service where you can send message to users on other Internet computers, anywhere in the world, using their email address. The message sent is very fast and free. Files, such as Word Documents, graphics and Spreadsheets can be attached to your email that can travel with your text message. Chat/Talk/Newsgroup is also a method of communicating with other people online. When chatting, obviously, both users have to be online. You can have a private chat with one person or join a large group in a discussion. Talk, is actually a voice over IP system where again you can talk privately to a person on the Internet or join a group discussion. Newsgroups, also called Usenet, is a public, online large discussion Internet service on wide variety of topics including news and people’s opinions. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is another use of the Internet service where files can be sent from one computer to another. There are many different types of ftp software clients, available on the internet, usually free or shareware clients. Telnet/Secure Shell Host (SSH) is a system or software that allows you to login into another computer, which can be at a great distance away, from your computer. The difference between telnet and SSH is that when using SSH data sent is encrypted, as oppose to plain text in telnet. Telenet/SSH software are also available as free shareware or at little cost on the Internet. |
