What is BCI?

BCI stands for Bardstown Cable Internet. BCI, a broadband ISP (Internet Service Provider), is your gateway to the Internet. Using state-of-the-art fiber and coaxial cable TV lines, the City Of Bardstown serves Bardstown & Nelson County with fast Internet service at great value.

How fast is it and why?

BCI's Internet Service has the capability to operate at speeds significantly faster than a typical 56K dial-up modem. This is possible because BCI uses the high bandwidth capabilities of Bardstown Cable TV's hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network. Our cable modems are currently set to operate at the maximum speeds* of 128, 256, or 512kbps. Through a contract, speeds exceeding T1 (approx. 1,400kbps) are available.

What are the systems network requirements?

All computers must have an available PCI slot open for an Ethernet card.

Minimum customer equipment  requirements:

Systems below this specification are not recommended for use on BCI network.

Intel Based Computers or equivalents

OS:                  Windows 95/98/NT 4.0/2000/XP

Processor:         Pentium Processor (166) or other equivalents

Memory:          16MB of RAM or greater

Hard Drive:      500MB or greater

Video:               SVGA

Macintosh Computers

OS:                  7.6.1 or higher

Processor:         68040, Power PC 601

Memory:           16MB of RAM

Hard Drive:        500MB or greater

What are the installation and service costs?

The standard service rates, depending on the different modem operating speeds and number of users, range from $29.95/mo. to $69.90/mo. for residential service and $49.95/mo. to $109/mo. for commercial service. The standard installation is $95.00. Please check the price link for more details.

What is a cable modem?

This is a device that allows you  to connect to the Internet through your cable network where you receive your TV connections. The cable modem translates RF (Radio Frequency) to a protocol that all computers understand on the Internet.

Can you watch TV at the same time as using BCI?

Yes. Your TV or data is not affected.

Does the service include newsgroup?

Yes.

Can I have more than one email?

Yes. Residential customers can have up to 5 different email accounts, and commercial customers can have up to 5, 25 or a contracted number of email accounts, depending on the level of service desired.

Do you have Domain name services?

Yes. Please check the service link for details in price, rates and service features. Also, faqs on Domain name hosting could answer some of your questions.

Can I connect more than one computer?

Yes. Each residential subscriber is allowed to connect up to 5 computers. Commercial subscribers can connect multiple computers depending on the level of service desired. Our modems support one Ethernet connection. Customers who wish to hook up multiple computers will need to purchase an Ethernet hub. BCI does not service customer networks beyond the cable modem. We can, however, offer some basic networking advice, as it relates to the provision of the selected level of BCI service and may advise customers to contact a qualified, 3rd party network service provider.

What is a telco-return/one-way?

With telco-return cable modems, cable lines are used for fast downstream transmission and a telephone modem handles upstream communication over the public telephone network.

How fast is my upload speed and why?

All cable modems are provisioned for 128k upstream with exception for 1mb commercial accounts which are provisioned at 256k.

*Although a cable modem is provisioned at a certain bandwidth (speed), a number of factors affect actual data throughput rates. The number of BCI subscribers in the neighborhood, subscriber configurations, as well as network and Internet traffic can combine to reduce actual data throughput speeds. BCI is committed to monitoring its network in a manner that, to the extent possible, provides subscribers connection speeds to the outside world at or near the cable modem?s provisioned bandwidth.
