What is BCI?

BCI stands for Bardstown Cable Internet. BCI, a broadband ISP (Internet Service Provider), is your gateway to the Internet. Using state-of-the-art fiber and coaxial cable TV lines, the City Of Bardstown serves Bardstown & Nelson County with fast Internet service at great value.

How fast is it and why?

BCI's Internet Service has the capability to operate at speeds significantly faster than a typical 56K dial-up modem. This is possible because BCI uses the high bandwidth capabilities of Bardstown Cable TV's hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network. Our cable modems are currently set to operate at the maximum speeds* of 3Mbps, 6Mbps, 10 Mbps, or 20 Mbps. Only through a contract, upload speeds may exceed 1Mbps (1024 kbps).

What are the systems network requirements?

All computers must have an available Ethernet card/port.

What are the installation and service costs?

The standard service rates, depending on the different modem operating speeds and number of users, range from $19.95/mo. to $49.95/mo. for residential service and $49.95/mo. to $69.90/mo. for commercial service. For further details, please check our rates page for more information.

What is a cable modem?

This is a device that allows you  to connect to the Internet through your cable network where you receive your TV connections. The cable modem translates RF (Radio Frequency) signals from a coaxial cable to a protocol that all computers understand on the Internet.

Can you watch TV at the same time as using BCI?

Yes. Your TV or data is not affected.

Does the service include newsgroup?

Yes.

Can I have more than one email?

Yes. Residential customers can have up to 5 different email accounts, and commercial customers can have up to 5, 25, or a contracted number of email accounts, depending on the level of service desired.

Do you have Domain name services?

Yes. Please check the service link for details in price, rates and service features. For further information, please check our FAQS Domain Names link.

Can I connect more than one computer?

Yes. Each residential subscriber is allowed to connect up to 5 computers. Commercial subscribers can connect multiple computers depending on the level of service desired. Our modems support one Ethernet connection. Customers who wish to hook up multiple computers will need to purchase an Ethernet hub. BCI does not service customer networks beyond the cable modem. We can, however, offer some basic networking advice or will refer to our customers a qualified, 3rd party network service provider.

How fast is my upload speed and why?

All cable modems are provisioned for 512kbps upstream* with the exception of Residential 4 and Commerical 2 (both 20 Mbps), which are provisioned for 1Mbps.

*Although a cable modem is provisioned at a certain bandwidth (speed), a number of factors affect actual data throughput rates. The number of BCI subscribers in the neighborhood, subscriber configurations, as well as network and Internet traffic can combine to reduce actual data throughput speeds. BCI is committed to monitoring its network in a manner that, to the extent possible, provides subscribers connection speeds to the outside world at or near the cable modem's provisioned bandwidth. If you would like to test your speeds, go to our Home page and select "Speed Test"
