Cable Modem Help The cable modem is the device needed to connect your computer to the internet. The modem is the first place to check when you are having problems. Here you will find information on what to check and how to properly troubleshoot a cable modem. On your cable modem you should see a variety of lights on the front of it, depending on the modem. If you have a Motorla Surfboard cable modem, you should have 4 green lights (Power, Receive, Send, Online) and two orange lights (PC Activity and Standby). Power: This light indicates that the modem is functioning properly. When the modem is restarted, this light should begin to flash. If you do not see this light on or if it never goes steady, make sure that the power cord is properly connected to the back of the modem and to the wall socket. If all these are correct then your cable modem is faulty. Receive: Now the cable modem is begining to aquire a downstream connection. If this light never goes steady, please make sure the cable line is screwed in properly and that their are no breaks or cracks in the wire. More than likely, if this light never goes solid your cable TV will not work either. If everything is in order and it still flashes, please call technical support. Send: Once the cable modem aquires its downstream channel, it will proceed to aquire an upstream channel. If this never goes solid then there is a problem with the cable line. Please call technical support for further assistance. Online: When this light is flashing, it is contacting our DHCP server to grant it access. If our server rejects this request, then the modem re-boots itself and tries again. If this happens please contact technical support and assure that you have paid your bill or that it has been correctly entered in our system. PC Activity: This light indicates when there is data being moved from the cable modem to the device connected to it (such as a PC or router). If you do not see this light on, make sure your PC or router is connected properly to the cable modem. Otherwise, it means that the ethernet port on the cable modem has gone bad or your ethernet card in your computer has gone bad. Please bring the modem to City Hall (220 N Fifth St) and we will confirm the issue. Standby: The Surfboard cable modem comes with a standby feature. When the modem is in this mode, indicated by a single orange/yellow light on the cable modem, no data can be transmitted to or from the cable modem. To toggle the standby mode, you should see a button on the top or front of the cable modem. For all other issues please contact technical support. |
